Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.
This verse describes a man suffering from three devastating conditions at once — demon possession, blindness, and muteness. In Jesus's time, people often believed such afflictions were caused by evil spirits. The man could not speak to ask for help, could not see to find his way, and was entirely at the mercy of whatever oppressed him. Jesus healed all three conditions completely — sight, speech, and freedom — in one encounter. The miracle was so extraordinary that the crowd began to wonder aloud whether Jesus might be the Messiah, the long-promised deliverer sent by God.
Lord, you see what holds me captive — the blindness I have grown used to, the words I cannot find, the things that keep me from fullness. Thank you for not waiting for me to come to you on my own. Help me receive your healing with open hands, and give me the grace to bring others who are struggling into your presence. Amen.
There is a detail in this verse that is easy to rush past: nobody asked the man if he wanted to be healed, because he could not ask anything. He had no voice to cry out, no eyes to see where Jesus was standing. He got to Jesus because someone brought him. The crowd did what the man could not do for himself — and that act of carrying someone to the right place changed everything. It is worth asking who in your life is in a similar situation right now. Not necessarily demon-possessed, but trapped in something that has taken their voice or their sight — grief that has gone underground, an addiction they cannot name, a depression that makes them invisible to themselves. Sometimes the most powerful thing faith asks of you is not a sermon or a solution. It is showing up with your hands out, saying, 'Let me bring you somewhere.' And it is also worth asking: are you the one who needs to be brought? You do not have to find Jesus on your own.
What does the combination of blindness, muteness, and demon possession tell us about the depth of this man's suffering — and what does Jesus healing all three at once say about who Jesus is?
Is there an area of your life where you feel spiritually 'blind' or unable to speak — something you struggle to name or find words for?
The Pharisees saw the same miracle and concluded Jesus was working through Satan. How do we guard against letting our assumptions about who God is — or isn't — cause us to miss what God is actually doing in front of us?
The man was brought to Jesus by others. Who in your life might need you to be the one who brings them — not with answers, but simply with presence and willingness to carry some of the weight?
Is there someone in your world who is isolated by their circumstances and unable to advocate for themselves? What is one concrete thing you could do this week to bring them closer to community or care?
And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
