When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick:
This verse describes a scene in Capernaum, a town in ancient Israel, where Jesus — a Jewish teacher and healer — had been performing miracles throughout the day. Evening had arrived, which in Jewish culture marked the end of the Sabbath, a weekly day of rest when certain activities were restricted. With that restriction lifted, crowds came flooding to Jesus with their most desperate cases. What's striking is how Jesus healed: not with rituals, lengthy prayers, or elaborate ceremony, but with a single spoken word. He healed everyone who came — not some, not the most deserving, but all of them.
Lord, you healed every single person who came to you that evening, and you haven't changed. I bring you what I've been carrying — the things I haven't named out loud yet. I don't need elaborate words. Just let me come. Amen.
There's something about the hour that matters here. Evening. The day is winding down, the desperate have been waiting, and now — finally — they come. Imagine what that crowd looked like: people pressed in from every direction, some carried on stretchers, some barely holding themselves upright. Jesus doesn't triage them, doesn't turn away the difficult cases, doesn't run out of power after the tenth healing. He drives out spirits with a word. Just his voice. No ritual, no conditions, no visible exhaustion. You may not be bringing a physical illness to Jesus tonight, but you're carrying something. The anxiety that hums underneath every ordinary Tuesday. The thing you haven't told anyone. The wound that hasn't healed despite years of trying. This verse doesn't promise that healing always looks the way we want it to — but it reveals something about who Jesus is. He didn't turn a single person away that evening. Not one. That's worth sitting with before you sleep tonight.
What does it tell you about Jesus that he healed "all the sick" — not just some of them? What does this reveal about his character?
Is there something you've been hesitant to bring to Jesus, as if you're not sure your need is "worth it"? What holds you back?
The crowd brought demon-possessed people to Jesus — people with invisible, internal struggles. How do you think about the intersection of spiritual and mental or emotional suffering today?
If someone in your life is suffering right now — physically, emotionally, or spiritually — what would it look like practically to bring them before God in a meaningful way this week?
What is one specific thing you could change about how you pray for healing — for yourself or someone you love?
