A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.
This proverb captures the beautiful tension between human responsibility and divine sovereignty. The 'man' (literally any person) makes plans in their inner being—the Hebrew word for 'heart' includes emotions, thoughts, and will. But God 'determines' (literally makes firm or establishes) each step. It's not either/or—God overrides our choices. It's both/and—we plan, we act, and somehow God's purposes weave through our decisions in ways we rarely see in the moment.
God of the unexpected turns, I offer you my color-coded dreams and my terrified what-ifs. Help me plan with wisdom and walk with trust. When my steps feel random, remind me you're making firm paths I cannot yet see. Teach me to hold plans loosely and your hand tightly. Amen.
You've got the spreadsheet open, haven't you? Color-coded tabs mapping out the next five years—career moves, relationship goals, financial milestones. Maybe you're more of a mental planner, rehearsing conversations, trying to control how people will react. King Solomon watches you with the slight smile of someone who's seen how this goes. Because you've been there: the job you prayed for that turned toxic, the person you weren't looking for who became home, the diagnosis that rerouted everything. Your plans weren't wasted—they were the conversation starter. The thing is, God rarely destroys our dreams; he usually exceeds them in directions we couldn't imagine. Your job isn't to figure out the mystery of how it all works. Your job is to keep walking, keep planning, keep holding those plans with open hands. The steps you're taking today, even the unsure ones, are becoming part of a story you couldn't write better if you tried.
What plans are you holding so tightly that you can't feel God's redirection?
How have you seen God's 'determining' actually enhance rather than destroy your human plans?
What would it mean for your daily decisions to plan faithfully while releasing control of outcomes?
Where might you be using 'God's will' as an excuse to avoid making any plans at all?
What is one area where you need to take the next faithful step without knowing how it fits the bigger picture?
Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?
