Psalms 37:23

Psalm 37 is a poem written by David — the famous shepherd-boy who became Israel's greatest king — composed in his old age after a lifetime of watching how things unfolded for both the righteous and the wicked. In this verse, he makes a personal observation rooted in experience: when God takes genuine delight in the way a person lives, God actively steadies their steps. Lord, I want to live in a way that you delight in — not to earn your favor, but because you are worth orienting my whole life toward. When I stumble, steady me. When I doubt, remind me you're watching with love, not disappointment. Make my steps firm today. Amen.

God delights in a man's way. Not his accomplishments, not his flawless spiritual record — his way. The word 'delight' isn't a word of duty. We delight in things that genuinely bring us joy, things we notice and want more of. The image here is of God watching how you move through your ordinary life — how you treat the person who frustrates you, how you handle money when no one's watching, how you show up for someone at 11 PM when you're already exhausted — and taking real pleasure in it. And what he saw was this: the person who keeps orienting their life toward God, even imperfectly, finds their feet caught before they fully fall. Not because they earned it.
