For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.
The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom sayings, many attributed to King Solomon — a king of ancient Israel renowned for his wisdom — compiled to teach people how to live well and wisely. Proverbs 5 as a whole is a father's warning to his son about the consequences of hidden sin and moral compromise. This verse arrives as a sobering anchor to that conversation: whatever a person believes they're doing in secret, God sees all of it. The word "examines" in the original Hebrew conveys more than casual observation — it suggests careful scrutiny, the kind of attention that misses nothing. The verse functions simultaneously as a warning to those hiding something and, surprisingly, as a comfort to those who simply want to live honestly.
God, you see everything — the parts I'm proud of and the parts I carefully hide. I don't always know what to do with that. But today I choose to stop pretending and start being honest with you. Meet me in what's real. Amen.
There's a version of this verse that sounds like a surveillance camera you can never turn off — God watching, cataloguing, building a case against you. That reading isn't entirely wrong. Proverbs is honest about consequences, and choices made in darkness tend to find their way into the light eventually. But there's another way to hear "he examines all his paths": nothing about your life is too small or too hidden to matter to God. The 2 AM scrolling, the thought you're ashamed of, the private act of kindness nobody witnessed — all of it is seen. That cuts in more than one direction. Here's what the verse doesn't say: it doesn't say God sees and is disgusted. It says he examines — like someone studying something carefully, trying to understand it fully. You are being known, not merely observed. That might be the most uncomfortable and the most freeing sentence you read today. You don't have to manage your image before God. He already sees past it. The only real question is whether you'll stop performing for the one who already knows what's behind the performance — and hasn't looked away.
Proverbs 5:21 sits inside a passage about sexual temptation, but its principle is much broader. What areas of your life do you most want to keep out of view — from God, from the people closest to you?
Does knowing God sees everything actually change the daily choices you make — and if not, why do you think that knowledge doesn't land with more weight?
Does God's full knowledge of your life feel more like a threat or an invitation to you right now? What might your honest answer reveal?
If you genuinely believed that God sees everyone's hidden life — not just yours — how might that change the way you judge or extend grace to the people around you?
Is there a habit, attitude, or hidden pattern you've been keeping in the dark? What would one honest step toward bringing it into the light look like this week?
For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
