This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
King James Version

Meaning

Paul wrote this letter to his young colleague Titus, whom he had left to help lead early Christian communities on the Mediterranean island of Crete. The phrase "trustworthy saying" was Paul's way of flagging a truth worth memorizing and repeating. He's urging Titus to keep pressing this point: people who have placed their trust in God should actively commit to doing good — not to earn God's favor, but as the natural result of having already received it. The word "devote" carries real intentionality; this isn't accidental kindness. Paul adds that this kind of life isn't just spiritually meaningful — it benefits everyone, believers and non-believers alike.

Prayer

Lord, thank you that I don't have to earn your love — but don't let that truth make me passive. Wake up in me a genuine desire to do good, not for applause or to feel worthy, but because you've already made me yours. Let my life be the echo of your grace. Amen.

Reflection

There's a subtle trap inside grace. Once you really understand that you're saved by faith and not by good behavior, it becomes surprisingly easy to stop caring about behavior altogether. Why push yourself to be generous or patient or honest if none of it changes your standing with God? Paul saw this coming. His answer wasn't to water down grace — it was to press on the throttle of it. He says: *because* you've been saved, now go do something. What Paul describes here isn't obligation — it's momentum. Faith, when it's real, moves. It shows up in Tuesday afternoon decisions: how you treat the coworker who takes credit for your work, whether you follow through on a promise when no one's checking, what you do with your money when no one's watching. You don't devote yourself to good things to become worthy. You do it because you already are. That shift in motivation changes everything about how it feels — and everything about how it looks to the people around you.
