Genesis 3:8

This verse comes immediately after one of the most pivotal moments in the Bible — Adam and Eve, the first humans God created, had just disobeyed Him by eating from the one tree He told them not to touch. Before this moment, the text suggests they had open, easy fellowship with God. Now, hearing Him approach, their instinct is to hide. The phrase "cool of the day" hints that God walking with them in the evening was routine — this was not a special event but ordinary life together. What changed was not God's approach; it was their response to it. The fact that they hid among the trees of the garden — in the very home God made for them — carries a painful irony. Shame had transformed paradise into a place to hide.

God, I am more like Adam and Eve than I want to admit — I hide not by leaving, but by going quiet. Thank You for not stopping when I pull back. Help me step out from behind the trees and trust that You already know everything, and still You come. Amen.

Something about the phrase "cool of the day" is quietly heartbreaking. It suggests this was a habit — God coming in the evening breeze, the way a parent lingers in a doorway before saying goodnight. And into that familiar, tender scene, Adam and Eve brought their hiding. They did not flee the garden entirely. They stayed, but pulled back — crouching behind the very trees God planted. That is uncomfortably human, is it not? Most of us do not walk away from faith altogether. We just go quieter. Keep showing up without really showing up. Technically present, emotionally gone. Where are you hiding right now? Not necessarily from faith itself, but from the specific, honest conversation you sense God walking toward. The thing you have not prayed about because naming it makes it too real. The failure you have compartmentalized. The question you are afraid to ask out loud. Notice what the verse does not say: that God stopped. He kept walking. He kept calling. The hiding was entirely theirs — the approaching was entirely His. That pattern has not changed.
