Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
In the book of Proverbs, Wisdom is personified as a woman — a teacher, guide, and companion worth pursuing above all else. This verse describes what she holds out to those who find her. In ancient Near Eastern culture, the right hand carried the place of honor and prominence, so long life in her right hand represents her greatest gift. Riches and honor, held in the left, are real but secondary blessings. The verse is part of a longer poem inviting readers to choose the path of wisdom, not just for moral reasons, but because wisdom leads to a life that is genuinely full.
God, I confess I often chase the gifts without chasing You — the source of all wisdom. Teach me to value what You value, to pursue depth over accumulation, and to recognize that wisdom is not just a tool but a way of being. Shape how I spend my days. Amen.
We spend enormous energy trying to build a good life — chasing security, stacking achievements, hoping our health holds. But here, Wisdom holds out both hands and says: what you're running after is already here. In me. What Proverbs is doing is subtle but radical. It isn't promising that wisdom makes life easy. It's saying that wisdom IS the life you're looking for — not a shortcut to it, not a strategy for getting there, but the thing itself. The right hand holds longevity, yes, but the deeper meaning is a life that counts, that runs deep, that doesn't hollow out at the center. Before you chase another source of security today, ask yourself honestly: are you actually pursuing wisdom? Because she's already standing in front of you, hands extended.
Why do you think Proverbs presents Wisdom as a person — a woman with something to offer — rather than a list of principles or rules?
When you imagine what a truly good life looks like for you, how central is wisdom to that picture, versus achievement, comfort, or security?
Proverbs connects wisdom with long life and prosperity, but wise people still suffer and die young. How do you hold that tension honestly without dismissing either the promise or the pain?
Wisdom often shapes how we treat others — with patience, discernment, and fairness. Where in your closest relationships do you most need to grow in that kind of wisdom right now?
What is one area of your life where you already know what the wise choice is, but you've been avoiding it? What would it take to act on it this week?
